Marcus Stoinis Retires from ODI Cricket to Focus on T20s
Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis has announced his retirement from ODI cricket, effective immediately. Cricket Australia confirmed the news on February 6 (Thursday), stating that Stoinis has decided to shift his focus entirely to T20 cricket.
Since making his debut in 2015, Stoinis has played 71 ODIs for Australia. He was initially named in the squad for the upcoming Champions Trophy but will now need to be replaced.
“Playing ODI cricket for Australia has been an incredible journey, and I’m grateful for every moment in the green and gold. Representing my country at the highest level is something I’ll always cherish,” Stoinis said.
“This wasn’t an easy decision, but I believe it’s the right time for me to step away from ODIs and fully focus on the next chapter of my career. I’ve got a fantastic relationship with Ron (Andrew McDonald) and have hugely appreciated his support,” he added.
Stoinis made a memorable mark early in his ODI career, smashing an unbeaten 146 against New Zealand in just his second game in 2017. His last appearance in the format came during Australia’s tour of Pakistan in November 2023. He retires with 1,495 runs and 48 wickets in ODIs and was part of Australia’s victorious 2023 World Cup squad. He was also named Australia’s ODI Cricketer of the Year for the 2018-19 season.
Reflecting on Stoinis’s contribution, Australian men’s Head Coach Andrew McDonald praised his impact on the team.
“Stoin has been such a pivotal part of our ODI setup for the past decade. Not only has he been an invaluable player but also an incredible presence in the group. He’s a natural leader, an exceptionally popular player, and a great person. He should be congratulated on his ODI career and all of his achievements,” McDonald said.
