India captain Harmanpreet Kaur believes the Women’s Premier League (WPL) will play a key role in India’s preparations for the upcoming home ODI World Cup. She emphasized that the T20 league will help players fine-tune their skills and improve their fitness during the free window after the tournament.
The five-team WPL will be held from February 14 to March 15 across four Indian cities, featuring 20 league matches and two knockout games. Following the WPL, India will have a three-month gap before their series in England, followed by home ODIs against Australia in September leading up to the World Cup in October. Harmanpreet highlighted that injured players could also use the WPL to regain match fitness.
“This WPL is going to play a very big role because we have the ODI World Cup this year,” Harmanpreet said at a press conference in Mumbai. “After the WPL, we have a great window to work on our fitness and elevate our game, which will be crucial for us.”

India failed to reach the semi-finals in the last ODI World Cup in 2022 under Mithali Raj’s captaincy. Harmanpreet acknowledged the packed international schedule, with India playing back-to-back series against Australia, West Indies, and Ireland. She also missed some games due to workload management, while key players like Pooja Vastrakar, Yastika Bhatia, and Renuka Singh have also been dealing with injuries.
“As cricketers, we love a packed schedule, though injuries are part of the game and sometimes beyond our control,” she said. “It’s great to see how much cricket we are playing, and I’m enjoying leading this team. Our young players have stepped up, and this year will be exciting with the home World Cup on the horizon.”rs begin in Nagpur.
